The Shape of Training Review aims to make sure we continue to train effective doctors who are fit to practise in the UK, provide high quality care and meet the needs of patients and the public. As part of this review, we looked at the desired outcome of training – what kinds of doctors are needed, and the means by which we get there. The main thrust of the Review is to put in place a structure that will produce doctors who are able to work in general areas of their specialties (the approach is described below). The report’s recommendations will help doctors to continue to meet patient and service demands now and in the future.
