The Standards

Audience & Scope

These standards apply to all organisations that have responsibility for ensuring that students on pre-registration health and social care professional programmes receive a high quality interprofessional education that equips them for collaborative working in practice. These include:

  • Higher Education Institutions: for example, academic leaders, programme directors, IPE leads, and curriculum developers
  • Education Providers in practice: for example, NHS Trusts, Health Boards, Clinical educators, service leads, and practice partners.
  • Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PRSBs) who define the standards of proficiency and education for entry into health and social care professions, for example the Health and Care Professions Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, General Dental Council and others.

They will also be of interest to researchers and policymakers shaping health and social care education at national and regional levels or studying the impact of interprofessional approaches.

Whether you are designing new provision, reviewing existing practice, or working across teams to embed IPE, these standards offer a practical and adaptable resource to support your work.

How to use the standards

The CAIPE Quality Standards have been written to support implementation in real-world settings, while maintaining flexibility for local adaptation. They are not a checklist, but rather a roadmap for quality improvement, enabling institutions and partners to deliver meaningful IPE that prepares students for collaborative practice.
