CAIPE QUALITY STANDARDS LAUNCH

CAIPE Launches the First-Ever Quality Standards for Interprofessional Education

London, UK – 3rd November 2025

The Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) has officially launched its Quality Standards for Pre-Registration Interprofessional Education (IPE) at a landmark event held at the House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Parminter.

Joint CAIPE Chairs Professor Liz Anderson and Dr Angela Lennox welcomed distinguished guests, regulators, educators, and practitioners to celebrate this milestone in health and social care education. Developed through extensive research and consultation with regulators and statutory bodies, these are the first evidence-based IPE standards to be published both nationally and internationally.

“These standards mark a turning point for collaborative, person-centred care,” said Professor Anderson. “They offer a flexible framework to embed interprofessional values into education and practice—supporting shared learning, mutual respect, and inclusive care.”

Dr Lennox added:

“This launch is a gift to the IPE community—not a commercial venture. We invite stakeholders across the system to work with us to evolve these standards and evaluate their impact.”

Sharon Buckley, CAIPE Trustee and Chair of CAIPE’s Standards Priority Group, emphasised the rigorous development process, which included input from professional bodies, regulators, and a wide range of stakeholders:

“The standards are organised into six domains and focus on educational processes rather than student outcomes, allowing flexibility across diverse contexts. We’re also developing a second set of standards for post-qualification IPE, expected next year.”

Siv Shanmugam, CAIPE Trustee and Senior Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, highlighted the practical application of the standards:

“They support a shift from isolated IPE sessions to a coherent, whole-systems approach. Whether you’re designing, delivering, or evaluating IPE, these standards offer clarity, direction, and collaboration.”

Mark Dexter, CAIPE Trustee and member of the CAIPE Standards Priority Group, reflected on the collaborative nature of the initiative:

“CAIPE’s work with regulators and statutory bodies shows what’s possible when there’s a system-wide goal to improve outcomes.”

Founded in 1987, CAIPE is a scholarly charity dedicated to advancing interprofessional education and collaborative practice. As a membership organisation, CAIPE reinvests all funding into research, standards development, faculty development, and translating evidence into practice. Its trustees, drawn from across the four home nations, serve voluntarily, contributing their time and expertise to drive forward this mission.
